When's the Best Time to Pour Concrete on the Tablelands?

Short answer: the dry season. If you're planning a driveway, shed slab or house slab anywhere on the Atherton Tablelands, the window from about May to November is when you want it poured, and the good weeks book out well before they arrive.

Why the wet season is hard on fresh concrete

Fresh concrete and heavy rain don't mix. A big downpour on a new pour can wash fines out of the surface, leave marks that never quite go away, and turn a prepared site into a bog before the truck even arrives. Up here that's not a rare event. Between December and April the Tablelands can cop serious rain for days at a stretch, and every one of those days is a day the job can't happen.

That doesn't mean nothing gets poured in the wet. Plenty of jobs still go ahead between systems, but they need more flexibility on dates, and there's always the chance a pour gets pushed back a week because the radar says so.

Why the dry season books out early

Everyone on the Tablelands knows the same thing: May to November is pouring weather. Builders schedule their slabs for it, farmers get their shed floors done before the wet, and homeowners want driveways finished before Christmas. That demand all lands in the same seven months, so local crews fill their calendars fast.

If you ring a concreter in September hoping for an October pour, you're often looking at the back of a queue. The people who get the dates they want are the ones who locked them in a month or two ahead.

When should you book?

• Pouring in the dry season (May to November): book four to eight weeks ahead. Earlier for bigger jobs like house slabs.
• Pouring in the wet season (December to April): it's doable, just build in some flexibility on dates and expect the weather to have a say.
• Planning a bigger project: talk to your concreter at the quoting stage about where the job fits in the season. Site prep can often happen earlier so the pour itself lands in a good window.

Does the Tablelands climate change anything else?

The Tablelands sits higher and cooler than the coast, which is honestly a nice place to be a slab. Milder temperatures are kinder on curing concrete than the heat down in Cairns. The main local factor is simply rain timing, which is why the calendar matters more up here than most places.
